In most cases the person sending the IM has viewed your profile. Check under the View column "who views you" ....or like Bigbear55 says...do the search of their name.
Personally I think people should ask in a email if they can IM you,unless you already have chatted before.

Happylife you don't need to delete chat when done with an IM. You just click the x like normal.
The next time you chat with that person, your last convo with that person will show I guess as a reminder.
No worries others cannot see it. Again though, to respond to your question, just click on the x on top of the IM chat box.

I agree with nycuriousmale, I believe people should ask through an email first about IM ing you. That will also give you time to search their profile and decided if you even want to. Many times I've had an IM just pop up from a random person wanting to cyber. It clearly states on my profile that I don't do that. So yes, people should be courteous enough to
first asking to IM so you can check them out first.

I keep getting IM's from some one who say they have not sent it. I have requested assistance with no reply. I have Blocked the person and the IM's continue. Any way to turn the IM off totally?

Go to tools and to Manager. The 2nd one listed is Instant Messaging. You can turn IM's off there.
Sounds like the person is forgetting who they IM.

I have Blocked them over a week ago. (see above message) They were very nice when I contacted them. saying they did not send the IM's. This happens about once a day. EACH DAY. When I try to look at their profile it has the statement that they can not contact me due to blocking..

I've changed IMs so that now, when you open an IM, the member's name up top is now clickable, and will load their profile in the main site window.

We've also now changed the appearance of Instant Message Notifications. You should be able to see their default photo, and have a link to their profile, as well as Accept and Decline buttons.
