Ishmael is a life changing novel by one of our favorite authors, Daniel Quinn. It is part of a 3 book series including My Ishmeal (the time line follows Ishmael--so it doesn;t matter too much which of these two you read 1st although the end of My Ishmael explains the end of Ishmael a little better) and The Story of B.
