Ideally we would meet in a public place, like a restaraunt, cafe or bar and begin by casually exchanging pleasantries, personal information etc. I really don't mind spending a bit of time on this first bit because while we're doing this our subconscious minds are reacting to all the chemical signals that indicate attraction. If the attraction is strong and both of us feel the chemistry I'm fine with moving fast but I don't have to and rarely push it. Certainly I back off if I feel that I'm moving to fast for someone. If I'm meeting a woman I generally let her set the pace of things. Men generally move faster.

The first meeting can be nothing more than an introduction and a way to set a date for something more formal, such as dinner, a movie, an art gallery or whatever. When two people meet they have to find mutual interests and move at a pace acceptable to both of them. I'm quiet easy at this stage as people aren't always interested in each other and a suggestion of a future meeting allows either party to let the other one down easy with a telephone call or an email. Nobody enjoys rejection, especially in person.

But it all depends on the two (or more) individuals doesn't it. Sometimes people "know" right away and want to get down to it and that's fine for me as long as every body is comfortable with the situation.
