xxxplrer | Having just returned home from a 3 week lecture tour around KY, including time spent in Murray (Yes, and staying in the building next to the one that blew up, 3 days after it happened!!!!!), that allowed me to take a side trip to visit Hopkinsville and scout it out. I will most definitely not be anywhere near Hopkinsville. The town is wonderful and the folks there even better. However, the roads and logistics are going to be a royal nightmare, not to mention migraine-worthy headache inducing. They literally have no clue what is about to descend on their town, in spite of all their advance preparations. If you begin to think biblical proportions of locusts, then you are starting to think down the right path. Hopkinsville will be the single best place in the entire US to witness this eclipse...if you can get there...and MANY are going to try...ALL AT ONCE! Just to give you an idea of the thinking there, they are ordering shirts by the dozen for the expected crowds. I tried to explain that, from my experiences chasing eclipses, that they should be thinking in terms of hundreds. They laughed and said it wasn't going to be that big a deal. I guess they told me! They are expecting 50,000 eclipse chasers at most, even though their own Chamber of Commerce has told them that there may be close to 100,000 tourists on the way. I tried to explain to them that they will hit those sorts of numbers if the forecast calls for rain all that day. If the forecast is for clear, they could potentially have 10X that number trying to navigate their roads, which could lead to town-wide gridlock. The Casey Jones Distillery seems to have the best laid plans with a whole festival on site (not to mention the "official" Moonshine of the eclipse in a very special collectible bottle...I already have a dozen...not to mention the best shirts so far), but the roads to get there are small, single lane roads and can not handle the potential crowds already making plans to be there. At least there are well placed signs to guide you there. The Golden Pond Planetarium at the Land Between The Lakes State Park seems to be ready but they are right on the edge of totality and, once again, can NOT handle a large crowd, but anyone visiting the area should plan a side trip there. My plans begin with spending the eclipse with friends in Franklin, KY. 20 seconds less totality but a major interstate to get me there...or get me out if the weather turns iffy. Whatever you do, make sure you can be ready to move and fast. DO NOT TRUST ANY FORECASTS FOR THIS AREA! KY weather at this time of year will only prove to be completely unpredictable both in the short and long term, so watch the trends starting 7 days out and plan accordingly within the final 3 or 4. If the forecasts are mixed, have alternate plans. I can be anywhere from SC to Casper, Wyoming within a 36 hour window. If you're not prepared to hit the road, then you'll only have to wait until 2024 to catch the next one. As it turns out, if you are out in western KY, there is a spot near Paducah which has the potential to see both this one and the next. Good luck to us all. Now...back to sex..... |
