My first prerequisite for wanting to know someone, let alone being with someone, is my perception of that person. I must preceive them as nice people. We have all heard what is said about first impressions!!. I have read some comments that seem to be scolding lectures about not reading ones profile before messaging. I always thought messaging was a compliment and that everyone liked compliments. I see people only like locals and expect only locals to respond. I would think that some of us travel out of our area so a possible meeting could take place. Back to blocking ones profile, that does not give me a good impression of you. Can't you simply not answer? Maybe it is simply not wanting to be bothered by people that do not have as many attributes that one demands.

There really isn't any other viable way to implement instant messaging into a website without a "popup window". For instance, if the instant message opened in the window you are browsing with, then all you would be able to do is talk in the IM, and you'd lose the site. Of course we could develop a proprietary instant messaging software, but then you'd have to rely on people downloading it and installing it.

There is one alternative, and I am developing it now. This would mainly use Java to implement instant messging. You would get a notification of an instant message, and when you click it, the IM would open. I am not sure when it will be finished, but I hope it will solve most of these issues.
