In order to successfully use Chat or Instant Messages you will need Java installed on your system. You can browse to the Java download page at Java.com and click Get it now. After installing Java, reboot your machine and IMs should work! I hope this helps!

Sometimes you can install Java, but for whatever reason the Plug-In for your browser doesn't register. To make sure your installation of java was successful, you can go to JavaTester.org/version.html and read what it says in the pink box.
If you see no pink box, you don't have a working installation of Java.
If you see a pink box, but it says something like "Java version 1.1.0 from Microsoft corp" it means you have an [u]extremely old[/u] version of java. MS Java 1.1.0 is from back in the day of Windows 95. Basically it's about a decade old. Common problems with this version are the box to type in is missing, or the java chat window doesn't appear at all.

Ideally, you would see something like "Java version 1.4.2_04 from Sun Microsystems". Java is no longer supported by microsoft. It's Sun's creation and Sun is the company to get Java from. If your pink box reads 1.4.2_03 from Sun Microsystems, you're golden.

In order to install java, go to Java.com and click Get It Now.
An automatic installation will begin on the next page.

If you have errors during the automatic installation, click Manual Download (under Get It Now). Click the file that matches your operating system. Once the file is downloaded, run it, and the installation will begin. The installation may take a while and requires an internet connection during installation, as the installation files are downloaded from the internet. Once installed, everything should work perfectly!
